Water-based radiators, which work by heating water through a boiler and release the hot air through pipes, are among the heating systems used in homes.

Water-based radiators have two basic types: steam radiators and hot water radiators.

Steam radiators

Steam radiators work just like teapots, boiling water and releasing heat in the form of steam. They can be a one-pipe system or two-pipe system. A one-pipe system has a single pipe that supplies steam and returns condensed water for recycling. A two-pipe system has two separate pipes for delivering steam and returning condensate.

Steam radiators are one of the oldest heating technologies and were popular in earlier times in the absence of electric motors and pumps. They have proven to be a reliable source of quiet and uniform heating for many years. It is for this reason that they are still used in many households despite the introduction of modern and more efficient heating systems.

Hot water radiators

Hot-water radiators have sealed hollow metal container filled with water. The water is heated by gravity feed, pressure pump, or convection. As heat is released, the “hot water cools and sinks to the bottom of the radiator and is forced out of a pipe at the other end.”

Hot water radiators are one of the most common heat distribution systems in modern homes.

The popularity of steam and hot water radiators emanates from their economic value. They have a service life of approximately 20-25 years, with many still working beyond that time frame. Regular maintenance, however, is still recommended to ensure that they work efficiently.
