Not all duct cleaning takes place in the HVAC systems of homes and offices. Graham Hendra of HeatingandVentilation.net discusses the need for restaurant owners to clean ducts from the grease that accumulates in them from airborne residue released when cooking.

Indepth Hygiene is warning that restaurateurs are failing to heed warnings about the dangers of failing to clean grease from ducting in extract ventilation systems.

The company says that on average there is one kitchen fire every day in the London area. In nine out of ten fires linked to catering facilities, un-cleaned grease deposits in grease extract ducting have ignited to make fires more widespread and destructive.

However, despite the compelling evidence that grease deposits in extract ventilation systems present serious fire hazards, Richard Norman, managing director of ductwork cleaning firm Indepth Hygiene Services believes that the message simply isn’t getting through. “Grease extract systems are often not given the attention they demand because extract ducting from the kitchen canopy often runs hidden behind ceilings and walls. Until a fire occurs, there are often seldom other clear signs of danger,” he said.

“But I am shocked at how many establishments still don’t prioritise grease extract cleaning; the costs of not doing so in terms of business disruption, damage to reputation, danger to the public and staff not to mention the legal implications can be substantial.”

Fire authorities believe that the grease extract ventilation system linked to catering facilities is the greatest risk to the safety of building occupants, and indeed grease deposits in extract ventilation systems must be removed for compliance with the Fire Safety Order.

Indepth Hygiene works closely with the fire authorities presenting to their inspecting officers on the issue of uncleaned grease extract systems.

Mr Norman continued: “The Fire Safety Order requires that ‘a person who has some level of control in the premises must take reasonable steps to reduce the risk from fire’. It is worth noting that should a fire occur in grease extract ductwork where there has been compliance failure and a fatality arises, the ‘responsible person’ could be facing criminal prosecution.”

In addition to the requirements of the Fire Safety Order UK property insurers such as Aviva, Zurich, Liverpool Victoria and AXA are now demanding kitchen grease extract ventilation ductwork be ‘cleaned in its entirety’ to comply with policy warranties.

“Most property insurers require grease extracts to be cleaned every six months and annually at an absolute minimum. However, we are seeing an increasing number of insurers requiring as many as four ductwork cleans per annum under their policies,” said Mr Norman.

Indepth Hygiene is frequently asked to provide expert witness services in court cases dealing with disputed cases involving fires in grease extract system; the company also provides informed and impartial advice prior to any litigation.

Mr Norman concluded: “Businesses need to pay attention to fire risk management. If it is not done in-house, it is important to ensure the company it is outsourced to is accredited by the Fire Protection Agency (FPA), Institute of Fire Engineers (IFE) or the National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health (NEBOSH). Failure to ensure this could lead to substantial financial implications if a fire was to occur.”

Few breakthroughs in remote control have been made since the one for television, but the most recent wave seems determined to outdo that.  Like many other appliances, air conditioners can now be controlled via text messaging- a feature integrated into the latest Hisense eco-friendly models. This CNW press release details more:

On September 23, Hisense and Sina Weibo announced in Beijing the availability of a cross-sector smart air conditioner, the power, temperature, and humidity of which can be controlled and adjusted by instructions sent via a private message over Weibo, China’s leading microblog service.

To activate, users register a Sina Weibo account for the air conditioner, which is connected via its power line, then add the account to their Friends List (with scalability to all mobile instant messaging tools including WeChat). The user then initiates a dialogue with the account via Weibo private messages to check the temperature, humidity, and other conditions at home and issue smart commands which will be seamlessly delivered to and executed by the air conditioner.

This new smart product lineup is being launched by Hisense Group following the success of smart TVs and smart refrigerators. Dr. Wang Zhigang of Hisense said it is a landmark product that adopts Hisense’s household Internet of Things technology. Mobile social technology is changing the lives of families at a faster pace than any of us could have ever imagined.

The relentless heat in the East and Midwest is more than a sign of global warming; it’s a health malady, sending some to hospitals and others in a desperate search for ways to keep cool and stay immune against heat-related illness.

The rising temperature is hard for everyone, but it’s even harder for people who have to work under the heat of the sun. Prolonged exposure to temperatures above 90 degrees can build up heat inside the body, which may then crumble under the stress. Heat exhaustion results in passing out, dizziness, headaches, or even a full-blown heat stroke. The best defenses against heat-related illnesses are adequate rest, rehydration, and a cool environment.

In a period of stifling heat, health symptoms are not solely responsible for dizzy spells — expensive energy bills are also enough to make owners of air-conditioned homes lose their cool. “You gotta remember to save money, every degree you go lower you raise your cooling costs by six percent,” says Mike Clendin, spokesperson of New York City energy supplier Con Edison. In this article, he proposes some economically and environmentally benign ways to help people cool their bodies in the scorching months.

  • Limit exhausting activities during the warmest part of the day;
  • Seek medical attention immediately if severe heat-related symptoms occur;
